Johnnie's Pastrami in Culver City is a quintessential deli experience that transports you back in time while serving some of the juiciest, most flavorful pastrami you'll find in Southern California. Since opening in 1952, this iconic spot has perfected their kosher-style pastrami sandwiches, making them the crown jewel of their menu. Whether you’re craving a hot pastrami sandwich piled high on rye or their famous French dip featuring tender corned beef on a fresh French roll, each bite bursts with rich, savory juices that linger delightfully on the palate.
The menu is a treasure trove for deli lovers. Standouts include the Hot Pastrami Sandwiches drenched in au jus, the perfectly crispy onion rings, and the indulgent chili fries topped with melted cheese and caramelized onions. If you prefer something beyond pastrami, Johnnie’s offers hearty charbroiled hot dogs—including their legendary Chili Dog and Chili Cheddar Cheese Dog—that are grilled to perfection and bursting with robust flavors. Their charbroiled hamburgers, especially the Big Mike B Double Burger and Chili Burger, stand out for their smoky char and satisfying heft.
One of the delights here is the way each dish is served: the fries arrive still hot in a basket, and their famous kosher-style pickles add a bright, tangy crunch that perfectly balances the richness of the sandwiches. Beverages like the classic Johnny’s Pastrami Coke and the frosty root beer float round out the experience with nostalgic charm.
Stepping inside Johnnie’s Pastrami, you instantly feel the warm, family atmosphere reflected by the friendly staff who seem genuinely proud to share their legacy. The vintage jukebox playing softly in the background enhances the nostalgic vibe, making it an inviting place to savor a meal whether you’re grabbing takeout or dining in their cozy indoor or outdoor seating areas.
Customers consistently rave about the generosity of the portions, with one visitor noting that their 4-inch thick layer of meat was so abundant, they had to ask for extra bread just to hold it all. Another praises the attention to detail—serving meat juice on the side to keep the sandwich moist and flavorful. Regulars highlight the spicy mustard as a must-have condiment to elevate the pastrami’s layered flavors. Many appreciate the authentic, juicy quality of the pastrami boiled in au jus, describing it as unlike anything else they’ve tasted.
Johnnie’s Pastrami is more than just a deli; it’s a local landmark where each visit feels like a celebration of classic Americana and deli craftsmanship. If you’re in Culver City and hunger for a rich, mouthwatering pastrami sandwich or a satisfying chili cheese dog, this is the spot where generous portions, timeless recipes, and heartfelt hospitality come together in perfect harmony.
We stopped by on a whim, and loved the look of it, so we went in. According to their menu, they are famous for their pastrami sandwiches and their chili. They do not have any gluten-free options other than a grilled chicken salad, unless you choose to have the pastrami by itself- which I have done before at another restaurant .Which is what I chose and my husband chose a pastrami sandwich. The server Anna was very helpful. She let me know some of the options that I had and was able to help us find a specific thing that we were looking for. As far as food goes, i was surprised that they didn't have provolone to go on their pastrami.Their options were swiss , american and cheddar. We have eaten at another place called The Hat for their pastrami and I would have to say that their pastrami was better, and also came with provolone cheese. However, what I did like about Johnnies pastrami though was that it was not fatty or overly stringy and the texture was good. My hubby said the same, nice flavor, and their bread was very good although a bit soft because of the aujus that they pour over. We also ordered the Boysenberry pie for hubby and vanilla ice cream for me. They were OK. I would recommend going at least once for the atmosphere and service. Maybe try the chili too, I hear they're famous for it!
We did a take out for a pastrami sandwich and my friend asked the store to keep the ingredients separate so that it doesn’t get soggy. After I placed 4” thick of meat on 8” long bread, there was still same amount off meat left (in the container) that I didn’t have space on the bread lol. They also provide a container of meat juice to add more moisture to the meat if desired. Result…… one super awesome pastrami sandwich! Hahahaha……
This pastrami place has been around since 1952. Walking in feels like you are time traveling into the past. The jukebox machine actually still works! One other thing you’ll notice is that there is a very kind, family atmosphere among the staff here. The pastrami I had today was something I have not tried before. The pastrami is boiled in an au ju sauce. This made the pastrami very juicy! It is so good! The 1/2 sandwich was $13, it was stacked to the brim and was such a great value for money. They do have outdoor seating with a fire pit in middle. Seems like a nice place to hang out next time. I like that they also have ample parking at the back.
Went to Johnnie’s Pastrami in Culver City after watching an online review about top pastrami spots. I got there just before the lunch rush and ordered the hot pastrami plate (piled high with juicy meat) along with fries and coleslaw. My tip: ask for the spicy mustard, it adds a perfect kick. I had a Coke too, and yes, they’ve got crushed ice, my favorite. Glad I beat the crowd, because it’s a small place with big charm. The mini jukeboxes on the tables (2 songs for a quarter) really complete the old-school diner vibe. Definitely worth a visit if you love classic spots and great pastrami. Stop by if you are in the area!
